5Impressive value, good quality, thin, light and simple-to-use
By Max
Wow. A feature-packed easy to use Nikon-quality camera for under £100? This is an impressive piece of kit.First impressions on opening the box is how light and thin the camera is. It's the size of a pack of cards and only a little heavier, even with the battery and a memory card installed. In this review I'll give a quick run-through of the main pros and cons for me, and then if you want more detail I've also included a run-down of the main features, picture quality, and what else is included in the box.If you find this review helpful please let me know by voting for it or by leaving a comment.***Pros***1. Picture quality for the size: I'm used to digital SLRs, and I'm reasonably impressed by the picture quality of this little camera by comparison to a Nikon D50 SLR.2. Ease of use: this really is a idiot-proof camera. Nikon provide a quick-start guide on paper and a full instruction manual on CD but you don't really need these - just put the battery and a memory card in, charge it up and you're ready to go.3. Zoom: the 4x optical zoom is good, and I like the option to zoom further in digitally on the camera. You can do this just by keeping your finger on the zoom rocker but helpfully the zoom pauses once the limit of the optical zoom is reached, which will preserve your pictures at the highest quality.4. Nikon quality: Nikon is known as a good name in cameras, so to get a camera from this company at such a low price is a real bargain.***Cons***1. The 'scene mode': this offers a whole range of scenes that you can set the camera to in order to get the best results (for example you might select the snow setting to take a picture of a snowman, or the dusk/dawn setting if taking pictures at that time). Whilst this feature works well, for me it is overcomplicated - I can't really remember which scenes the camera offers, and I haven't found myself using the feature at all so far.2. No memory card with the camera: This is standard - but just a warning that you'll need to get a memory card if you want to take more than a few pictures, or more than about five seconds of video.3. No case: it would have been great to have a slimline case in the box with the camera, although for the price I'm not surprised one hasn't been included. These cons are only very minor - and far outweighed for me by the pros above. Go ahead and buy this - you won't regret it.And if you'd like more details...***Features***Nikon have strongly emphasised the 'point-and-click' features of this camera - once out of the box and charged you don't need to touch any of the settings - almost everything is automated.A 4x optical zoom gives impressive close-ups, with the option of zooming in even further digitally. The digital zoom leads to a small reduction in quality and a bit of camera shake, but the photos come out well in daylight. If you want to go a bit beyond the point-and-click mode, the camera offers several clever options, including a 'smart portrait mode' that detects human faces and then takes the picture when you smile (clever, if a little eerie at first!). The 'subject tracking mode' will focus on the thing you're taking a photo of, and keep that thing in focus even if it's moving (this worked well even with a very energetic family dog). The video mode is fairly basic, but works well, and I have found it is almost as good quality as the cheap video-only cameras available (such as the Flip Video Ultra Camcorder, 2nd Generation With 4GB Memory - Fuchsia Pink) which are about the same price as this.***Picture quality***Nikon is usually known for good quality, and this camera doesn't disappoint. Pictures taken close-up or with full zoom have come out very well for me. I also have a Digital SLR (an old Nikon D50), and it's interesting to compare the picture quality. This Coolpix camera produces equally sharp, if not more sharp, pictures than the D50 because of the higher resolution (12 Megapixels for the Coolpix as opposed to 6 Megapixels for my D50). On the other hand the D50 does produce slightly richer colours in its photos because of the lens quality. But considering their difference in size and cost, the Coolpix picture quality is pretty good.***What else is in the box***Included is a battery and case, a charging cable that doubles as a cable to upload your photos to your computer, a strap, a quick start guide on paper, a full users manual on CD, an AV cable to connect to a TV and a CD of photo editing software. It would have been lovely to have a case for the camera, but at the price I'm not surprised that it isn't include. The quick start guide is really all you need to get going - I haven't even looked at the full user manual.***Conclusions***For someone who is used to the quality (but also the weight) of a bulky digital SLR, this little beauty is a real pleasure to use. Whilst it won't replace my big camera for holidays etc, this provides a brilliant alternative when out and about, or in places where my big camera would be inconvenient or at risk, such as at a festival. If you are less into your photography and just want a camera that will take good photos with no fuss, you can't go wrong with this. Put it on full auto and many of the clever features will work quietly in the background to get good photos with ease.Strongly recommended.

5Great combination of features
By Ray Blake
At this stage in the technology's development, digital cameras are pretty generic in most repects, and manufacturers have to compete on less obvious features than MPs and zooms. Some go for software, others for physical size and Nikon has certainly scored in both. But the real win for me is the refresh speed. I am used to waiting a few seconds between shots from comparable cameras, whereas this Nikon is very quick indeed. Nicely done.

Was surprised at how light and small the camera on. Fits into your trouser pockets perfectly. It takes great photos and I love the little feature where it focuses on your face straight away, is quite cool :) The speed in which photos take on this as well is quick and is nice not to have to hold onto the button and play around with it to actually take the picture. Its a perfect little digital camera, excellent for holiday needs and family days out needs. Great value for money and I definately recommend it if you need a new digital camera.
