5Great sound and picture (Wi-Fi ready via dongle)
By Mart Music
In terms of sound quality, specification and user friendliness I found this system very good. It will play all DVD types, 2D and 3D, and all versions of Blu-ray discs, again both 2D and 3D. The unit is Wi-Fi ready via a dongle as stated in the spec.Speakers are very compact measuring (width/height/depth) 36x7x7cm (front centre), 14x9x7 (front L&R), 9x11x7(rear L&R) and 16x29x36 (subwoofer). The 1000 watts spec sounds like this system should shake the house down, but thankfully it doesn't. The sound is subtle and well balanced, and the controls allow quick and easy adjustments of subwoofer level and speaker volume.

4Samsung HT-D5100
By Richard
Excellent product, easy to understand manual and if followed set up is simple. The remote control will also control our Samsung television, therefore you can switch it off by mistake if you are not careful. Sound switches automatically to system if switched on. Note however that you will have to sync. sound if using HD TV. Overall very pleased.

3"Built in wifi" is not true
By Steve
I bought one of these at the same time as buying a 40inch samsung TVBoth have "built in wifi" written in the description, but with the surround sound unit you have to buy a dongle to plug into the back to use wifi.Which is like saying my 3 bedroom house has 4 bedrooms... if I pay for an extension! If you have to buy a dongle, then it is not built in!It also seems that if you use HDMI with ARC (Audio return channel) so that the channels selected on your TV are played via the surround sound then whatever you connect via the AUX/optical will not work.(I have Virgin media connected via optical, and DTV from the TV itself... if ARC is enabled then optical does not work unless I unplug the HDMI cable.)Other than than the above; the system has good sound, nice small speakers and good bass.I wouldn't say I am unhappy with the product, just disappointed that it does not do what I expected.(they should stop calling it built-in wifi, if it is not built in!)

5Almost Perfect, just some niggly negatives
By Split-Pea Soup
I bought this camera two weeks ago and have since tested it with 6 hours of video, and over 3000 pictures in various conditions, indoor, outdoor, in snow, sunshine, cold weather, warm weather, and decided to write a short review about the camera. I have about twenty years of hobby old-school SLR experience and my first digital camera was the Ixus 50 which we have donated since purchasing this camera. I have uploaded some photos I have taken with this camera that you can see above as well.THE POSITIVES:* Truly excellent outdoor photography, I would venture to say near SLR quality* The zoom is excellent, and gives nice clear shots at great distances* Full Automatic is excellent and nearly idiot-proof, and fully manual is also possible (see negatives below)* Camera is light and very transportable* Indoor photography is VERY GOOD, however not excellent (see negatives below)* Easy to use menus, very straightforward controls and easy to use controls, surfaces, and all is very reachable, with just the thumb.* Macro shots are very nice* Nearly every imaginable setting possible that could be wanted, needed or used is available on this camera.* Stabilizer is excellent and allows shots at 1/4 second without a tripod (with my analog SLR at less than 1/60 it was already iffy)* Battery life is good, but I still recommend a backup (OEM work as of version 1.0)* Auto Focus is super fast, and with AF tracking you can really get some nice sport shots* HD video is excellent quality (720 not 1080) but unfortunately limited to 30 minutes in the EU (tax regulations I guess).* Raw photos and does RAW+JPEG simultaneously, this means you get a RAW AND a JPEG saved on your card for each picture.* The software that comes with it is useful. In the slideshow you can click on properties and see exactly which fstop/shutterspeed was used, which setting, etc. You can also search your database per each and every camera setting you want. i.e. it categorizes all photos taken in "nightlandscape" or "high dynamic range". Can be useful when you have thousands of photos to look through.* 16:9, 4:3, 3:2 shot formats possible* comes with a lenscap!THE NOT SO POSITIVES:* Fully Automatic indoor photos can be grainy with flash------THE FIX: In P mode on your camera, you can turn off intelligent ISO and manually set the ISO to 80 or 100 and you get excellent quality pictures anyway with little or no grain. In intelligent ISO mode, you can set the max ISO as well, (200, 400, 800, 1600 are possible). If you set this at 200 you can get very nice indoor photos.* Zoom is a bit noisy in video mode* Auto focus is really annoying in video mode, constantly focusing and unfocusing.------THE FIX: you can turn off constant auto focus in the menu while shooting in Manual video mode. I recommend this for most situations, especially fast moving targets, or party situations where there are a lot of different areas to have to focus on. Also, set the zoom at say 3x and leave it for most applications* Video limited to 30 minutes at a time (not a big issue for me)due to EU regulations, though this is not the camera's fault ;)* Manual focus for pictures is possible only by using the toggle stick, joystick thingy, the lens itself is not manually focusable. This means you only have a digital manual focus. The AF is so excellent though, I have rarely used the manual focus on this camera.* Raw photos not useable with Irfanview, the program I use. They are viewable with the supplied software, but I guess also not with photoshop. EDIT- There is an Irfanview Update which allows you to work with RAW photos!* No BULBS (leaving the shutter open indefinitely) setting, however, in the night landscape, and starry night modes, shutterspeeds of 8,15,30, and 60 seconds are possible which enable some pretty creative shots.SUMMARY:This camera more than fulfills its role as a bridge camera and I am extremely pleased with both the quality of photos as well as the video quality. It is very light, very transportable and is an excellent allround camera which satisfies the point and shoot crowd as well as the more photo savvy crowd as well. The very small negatives to the camera have very doable and acceptable workarounds or fixes and as such, this camera gets a full five stars for doing exactly what it states and doing it very well. Even hobby SLR enthusiasts will find this camera has enough manual settings and creative setting possibilities to keep you well satisfied and keep your creative juices flowing without having to slap down big bucks for an SLR.I do recommend at least an 8GB, class 6 or better memory card for this camera. I bought the 16GB verbatim class six card from here at Amazon, and this allows the 30 minute max video (so does my 8GB card though) and 1600+ photos at the highest setting (Raw 12M.)Enjoy! I will post some photos soon that I have taken with this camera.

5Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ38 - One Stop Shop
By AD
Historically, my camera choices have tended to reflect my situation at the time. When single, it was a heavy 35mm with a variety of lenses, with the results similarily variable on the "creative" shots. When married with kids and with less hands and time, it was a smaller compact 35mm and camcorder. The last few years it has been a small digital camera with 3x optical zoom and an inbuilt video function. Now the children are older and more self conscious and the Christmas present opening marathons have passed, I've graduated back to looking for a quality camera to go back to those more creative shots (with the added ability to delete the disasters!)coupled with a higher level video function. After extensive research, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ38 seemed to fit the bill and having road tested it, I am very pleased with the results. It is compact for it's type, light and the photographs produced are excellent. If we're all honest, the modern camera in "intelligent auto" mode flatters any photgrapher and this camera is no exception. The pictures produced are crisp and colour rendering faithful. There is the obvious option to change to manual mode and this can all be explored during quieter times - it's nice having the choice. The video function is first class and as my videos only represent 2-3 minute "snapshots", this is ideal. I personally don't use the full AVCHQ mode as this format is only playable with the enclosed software (ie not with Windows Media Player). The level below (HD) is fine and can be played with Quicktime or Realplayer. I have an 8Gb Transcend SDHC card(Class 6 - faster transfer within and from the camera)and this allows 1157 shots on the highest JPEG setting or 30 minutes of video (there is a 30 minute limit apparently) My only obsevation is that the sound of the zoom can be heard during quiet shots, but this is not the end of the world, particularily as the camera is the primary function for me. Both the pictures and video look fantastic through the television (40" LCD).The battery time is excellent, although I have invested in a second one as they are quite cheap through Amazon. It is also worth considering a UV filter or similar, more to protect the lense than anything else (there is a plastic lense cover supplied)In all, a fantastic "one stop shop", with both camera and video functions complementing themselves in quality.Don't look too deep - this is not a top of the range DSLR nor a happy snapper - it is a fully functional, useable, grown up camera, which has a versitile zoom and the ability to take pictures in all conditions with confidence.I thoroughly recommend this one if you want the next step up.

4Everything you ever need
By Steamin' Willie
I bought this after reading many reviews, and considering the competition.Like many who have given views on this camera, I have an SLR (Nikon D50) and am getting rather tired of lugging many lenses around, getting dust on the sensor and having a heavy camera in general. However, I did wish to carry on using RAW, have a good range of manual adjustments and for the first time in my life, use a camcorder, (mainly through curiosity rather than needing one.)So, this ticks all the boxes so far. It is cheaper than an ultra zoom lens for the SLR and is small and light, although not small enough for a pocket. You still have to lug it around. After three days of intermittent use, I find the quality to be excellent, although the high ISO noise is much more apparent than my SLR, but you would expect that. I have yet to see a compact camera that negates all the advantages of an SLR. the zoom is excellent and the camera shake technology seems to work ok. I am very impressed with the macro facility, although I note the 1cm is at the widest setting and as you zoom, the minimum distance increases. the intelligent auto is a dream, but by being so good, does mean enthusiasts may feel less minded to use the manual overrides. I took a few pictures where I set the aperture, white, shutter speed etc and then took the picture again using intelligent auto. Whilst not a mind reader, it certainly knew what to do, and many looked better than using my own settings.Users of compact cameras may feel that removing a lens cap is a bit old fashioned, but it does hang from the camera so you won't lose it. The view finder mimics everything the LCD display does, but its lack of pixels means you may want to use the LCD most of the time. Curiously, the instruction book reckons the power usage is the same. I fail to see how, but there you go!I have large hands yet I can get at all the controls easily enough, even the small joystick. Camcorder recording is by a dedicated button, leaving you free to play with the zoom when in use. Not all cameras can optically zoom in camcorder mode, but this has the full range available. Despite the stereo microphone being on top of the camera, I could not detect any noise from the zoom motor. The menus are logically laid out (to me) and the buttons on the back and top are for the features I would normally want quick access to.Downsides? Well, the first is the difference between the European and American models. It is not just a name (35 vs 38.) the firmware is slightly different, which means that if you use Adobe Photoshop, the latest Camera RAW update includes the American version but not the European one. In short, for now, you have to process RAW with the supplied software rather than Photoshop or Lightroom. As I mentioned above, the only other gripes are the poor quality through the viewfinder and noise at low light.Me? I am happy as pigs in the proverbial...

5Review of Acer Aspire S3-391 13.3-inch Ultrabook (Intel Core i7 3517U 1.9GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, 20GB SSD
By Winnie Woodlord
This is a 'first impressions' review of the Acer Aspire S3-391 13.3-inch Ultrabook (Intel Core i7 3517U 1.9GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, 20GB SSD, LAN, WLAN, BT, Webcam, Integrated Graphics, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit)The exact model is the Aspire S3-391-73514G52add - NX.M1FSI.002.I looked at other ultrabooks, such as the Asus Zenbook UX32A, but this seems to ship with only a Core i5 processor and is higher priced. The Acer Aspire S3-391 model I chose is slightly cheaper and has a 3rd generation Ivy Bridge i7 3517U - so simply on GPU performance, it is a better buy for the money.I also considered the Lenovo Ideapad U310, but these have had wifi problems according to several reviews and forums.I thought about going for the bigger Acer Aspire Timeline M3 with a 15.6 inch screen and Nvidia GeForce GT 640M graphics card, but this is nearly a whole kilo heavier. A good but rather heavy ultrabook or lightish laptop if you want to do some gaming, but in the end I decided that having used a 17 inch Samsung R700 for the last four years, which is both heavy and gets pretty hot, what I wanted most was a light and thin, cool-running ultrabook with a fast chip - so the S3 model with the Intel Core i7 3517U GPU seemed like the best choice, although the one with the i5 3317 chip would have been another good choice if you want to spend slightly less money but still get a 3rd generation Ivy Bridge chip.BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN CHOOSING the GPU in your Acer Ultrabook S3 - make sure it has the i5 3317 or the i7 3517 - these are both 3rd generation Intel Ivy Bridge chips. There are still many Acer Aspire S3s around with the second generation Sandy Bridge chips, and sometimes these can be the same price or actually more expensive than the newer S3s with the 3rd generation Ivy Bridge chips, which have the better Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics (the 2nd generation Sandy Bridge chips only have the HD 3000 integrated graphics).Having chosen an S3 with a Core i7 3517 GPU, I then had to decide whether to go for the one with the 128GB SSD or the hybrid 500GB HDD + 20GB SSD. I found this a really hard decision, as some of the reviews went on about the advantages of having an SSD (solid state) drive from the point of view of faster program loading and less battery usage.SSD drives have in the past been more expensive than HDD drives, but the price of SSD drives is coming down fast. I read a couple of reviews that said that a 128GB SSD drive just doesn't have enough storage, as you may only have 90GB of usable storage (and one review said this was as low as only 50GB of storage available, which I can well believe, as the operating system, eRecovery Management and the Backup Manager could easily take up 40 or 50GB.) If you then want to install Microsoft Office, and perhaps an Adobe CS Design or Adobe CS Master Edition package, you could be down to only 30 or 40 GB left to you on a 128GB SSD - before you have even started downloading any photos or videos, MP3s or games! As the S3 with the hybrid 500GB HDD + 20GB SSD still wakes up from sleep in 1.5 to 3 seconds (current programs and files which you've just been using are dumped on the 20GB SSD to allow for this fast wake up) - the difference between the 128GB SSD version and the 500GB HDD + 20GB SSD version is going to be pretty negligible for most purposes.I think for a general use ultrabook laptop, the one with the 500GB hard drive + 20GB SSD is more practical - and SSDs have not been around that long, so who knows how long they will last? Whereas HDDs are proven, reliable technology, and okay, they have moving parts - but so what?Someone I know who has a Masters degree in Advanced Computer Science said he would not rely on just an SSD drive and would choose a model with an HDD drive as well - so that's what I did, in the end. I have also noticed that the price differential between pure SSD models and hybrid HDD + SSD models appears to have reversed. The SSD models were formerly a lot more expensive and the ones with hybrid HDD + small SSD drives were supposed to be a 'budget' choice; but now the 500GB HDD + 20GB SSD Acer S3 ultrabooks are not cheaper but the same price or actually more expensive by a few pounds than the 128GB SSD models, so it looks like the price premium on SSD drives has come down to the point where there is no difference - or perhap the HDD + SSD hybrids are proving more popular because most people want at least 500GB storage and the market is flooded with 128GB SSD drive models. Only the 256GB SSD models are still commanding a premium price. It boils down to personal preference about how much storage you want and whether you care about a few minutes extra battery time and a matter of a second or two claimed advantage in program loading times with SSD drives.I can confirm that the Acer Aspire S3-391 Ultrabook with Intel Core i7 3517U and 500GB HDD + 20GB SSD is a beautiful machine. It is ultra-slim and wonderfully light (at 1.35 kg), very fast, and runs cool, with little fan noise or HDD drive noise. It is so light that if you are using Skype, you can pass it one-handed to someone else rather than all having to cram round the screen of a heavier machine at the same time; it has really excellent performance on Skype, with clear sound and fast video images - the best laptop for Skype I have ever come across. It is also good for playing `Second Life' - which is about the only gaming I do.The chiclet keyboard is precise and accurate with a good click on the keys. The keys are comfortably spaced and easy to get used to even if you're used to a traditional keyboard. I don't find the key travel too shallow, as some people have commented on 'island' style keyboards. I learnt to touch type on a manual typewriter - so I am quite heavy in the way I hammer away on the keys, but the keyboard on the S3 seems well able to stand up to it - and I found the keys registered well on first tap and was soon touch typing quite fast, with few mistakes. The keyboard is not backlit - which doesn't bother me - isn't it just more to go wrong? If you feel you must have a backlit keyboard you might consider the Acer S5 or S7 - but they are around double the price or more compared with the S3.The touchpad is good - a comfortable size, with a solid and well-defined click action in bottom left and right corners and enough space for sliding and stroking actions; it's also not too big so you don't accidentally move the palm of your hand over it and do something you didn't intend to do with the cursor. The second generation Acer Aspire S3-391 Ultrabook looks very smart with a classy-looking silver aluminium lid and matching silver magnesium alloy body. The keyboard has white lettering on rounded black keys which contrasts well (rather than the less contrasting grey keys in the previous iteration of the S3).Another good point is that neither the lid nor the body show up fingerprints, as is the case with glossy black-bodied machines like my Samsung R700 (on which, incidentally, the keyboard lettering rubbed off very quickly, and I have been through two keyboards and 2 sets of stick-on letters before finally in desperation putting on a silicon keyboard protector to stop the letters rubbing off again. For this reason, although Samsungs are reliable, I won't buy another Samsung laptop. Acer also have a good reputation for reliability and I am hoping the lettering on the Acer S3 will last longer, as it has on my Acer Aspire One netbook.)The 13.3-inch display (1366×768 pixels) is sharp and clear and the Dolby Home Theater speakers perform competently and provide a comfortable sound level for listening to BBC iPlayer radio; the stereo channels sound even better through in-ear earphones. The 3 cell Lithium Polymer battery lasts about 3.5 hours between charges under heavy use, eg. if you are using the Internet, accessing websites, have several programs running and a lot of windows open. I guess you'd get more like 5 hours if you were just using it offline, eg. using Microsoft Word. A good point about the battery is that it recharges really quickly - taking only 2.5 hours to reach full charge from full discharge. I guess there's a limit to what you can get out of three cells shaped to fit the ultra-thin case and a heavier battery would make the whole unit a lot heavier. If you want a battery that lasts longer between charges, maybe get the Acer M3.In conclusion, I would definitely recommend this machine. It looks beautiful, has a high specification and offer good value for money compared with other similar ultrabooks.(The other two reviews of the Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook which you may come across on Amazon are in fact reviews of the Acer S5 Ultrabook, which is a completely different machine - the S5 is the one with the motorised port flap. I hope this genuine review of the Acer Aspire S3-391 will be of some help to people thinking of buying the it.)--------------------------------------------------------------------(The section below is only for those who are inclined to be a bit OCD with new computer hardware and inclined (like me!) to obsess somewhat about technical issues such as battery conditioning...)According to the Acer User Guide (not easy to find - hidden in an AcerSystem menu when there should be a link to it on the desktop on first start-up) you are supposed to condition the new battery by doing three full charge and discharge cycles on first use. What they mean by 'first use' is open to interpretation, as the Setup Poster tells you to plug it into the mains before switching on for the first time, so you are de facto re-charging the battery before it has been fully discharged. As it is in its delivery state, it will inevitably be only partially charged. When it had reached full charge for the first time I used it for several hours plugged into the mains while I installed programs and got to know the machine. I then unplugged it and ran it on battery to about 45% discharge, after which I plugged it in to charge it overnight, as it recommends elsewhere in the section on the battery in the User Guide. I then read the bit about doing the three full discharge and recharge cycles on first use and thought 'Oh dear, I shouldn't have charged it overnight when it was only partially discharged!'It is possible easily to tie oneself in knots over these sort of ambiguous instructions which are common in computer manuals, and certainly the section on the battery directly contradicts itself several times. For example it advocates the use of AC power whenever possible but points out that using the computer on constant AC power adversely affects the lifespan of the battery! It also cheerfully comments: 'The more you use the battery, the faster it will reach the end of its effective life' and 'Excessive recharging decreases the battery life.' What on earth is 'excessive recharging?' If you're not supposed to leave it connected to the mains for long periods, inevitably you will need to recharge it from time to time - when does this become excessive? One may well conclude that there is no way to win with computer batteries. Whatever one does, they will eventually wear out and lose performance. So I would think it's okay to do the three discharge/recharge cycles any time within the first few days - but I am not sure it's really necessary at all.My relative who has an M.Sc. in Advance Computer Science is quite clear that there is really no point in worrying at all abut battery conditioning and usage - just use the darn thing and plug in to the mains whenever you want - because whatever you do won't make much difference and the computer itself is likely to become out of date or clapped out a long time before the battery's deterioration becomes an issue.User Guides are generally written by technical geeks who don't have a particularly good command of written English (it may not even be their first language); and they rarely consider the literal interpretation or any logical ambiguities in what they have written.I think the advice in the Acer User Guide may be out-of-date generic advice as Li-Pol batteries do not have a 'memory' like the old NiCad batteries and according to most advice on lithium batteries do not require conditioning in this way - they can be connected to the mains and re-charged at any stage of discharge.I have queried this by email with Acer Support (no useful response yet from Acer - I don't think the person who replied even understood the question.) I just got a generic reply saying how to re-calibrate the battery, which you certainly don't need to do when it is new. I have emailed twice more about this and have still received no reply.Acer Support appears to be pretty crap in the U.K. - the Acer telephone numbers are 10p per minute to report a fault and an extortionate 50p per minute on a premium 09 number for technical enquiries when the unit is beyond the standard one year warranty. This compares unfavourably with Acer Support freephone numbers in the U.S. and Canada, so Acer should really do better than this for U.K. customers. Fortunately Acer laptops have a good reputation for reliability - so hopefully you won't have to contact their support, but I'd be interested in how this compares with the support offered in the U.K. by other manufacturers such as Dell, Asus, and Lenovo.I will also update my impressions when I've been using the Acer Aspire S3-391 a bit longer.

2Not the one I want
By Nada
I purchased the one with hardware of 500GB HDD, but the item I received is 128GB SSD, and the retailer didn't allow me to return the item. The noise of this item is loud, but the other things are OK. It is fast to open up and quite light to carry to everywhere.

4Great size and weight, super quick but very little storage
By William Landry
Very quick laptop and great size. The two main reason it was bought to be honest. Was hesitant on the very low storage in the 128gb ssd but thought the added speed of it being an ssd would make up for it. Be warned that your 128gb has under 65gb available after OS and the bloat ware acer have added which is crazy. Still though if u don't mind using an external drive its a great little machine perfect if your on the move with it a lot, great battery life if all your doing is surfing and using word or excel.

4This box is very brilliantly good Charlie... :)
By Griff
This is a review for the Sony BDVE370.CEK 5.1 ch Blu-Ray Home Cinema System as listed on Amazon.co.ukSo, we said to ourselves... "We really need to replace our broken down surround system, what should we get?". Well, I'd wanted something that could bring together all my media needs for a while and so thought this the perfect opportunity to look in to what was new on the market!Almost straight away I stumbled upon this Sony BDVE370 player because, well, it had such good reviews and appeared to do everything! It had 5.1 surround, could play Blu-ray, was 3D ready, could up-sample DVDs, Stream media from the internet and your local PC, and had a wizzy interface... Could it be the perfect home cinema system?Well, we bought it and now I can tell you what I think.1) Installation - No issues here, unpack it, plug it in and off you go. For those that are interested the speaker cables are very thin, the front ones are 3m each and the rear ones are like 8 to 9m I'd say? (These were not long enough for my room, so I had to splice `em!). There is only one power cable required for the whole system which is a boon. The included sound calibration mike then helped to get everything, umm, calibrated! I did however decide to drop the subwoofer down by 2db as it sounded a little over powered compared to the satellites.2) Connectivity - I did not want to go down the route of buying Sony's wireless dongle, so I bought a homeplug networking kit. Was mildly worried about whether it would work, but it's just great and from the moment I plugged it in it has worked flawlessly (At £40 for a pair or reusable network points it was a no brainer). Hey also, don't forget to buy an HDMI cable ;)3) The Interface - The Sony interface (that scrolling bar of options) is a strange beast in that it is unlike any other interface, and as such might take some getting used to. However it really didn't pose me any threat and it looks nice :). One thing to note is that after the initial firmware upgrade, and after connecting a hard drive / USB stick, and setting up my PC for media streaming, the video menu of the Sony player is quickly filling up with options... I hope this won't get too confusing for people wanting to use my player when I am not around.4) The Sound - Oh, it's lovely having the surround sound working again. We've watched a couple of movies and are not disappointed. Like I said, I needed to drop the subwoofers volume by 2db as otherwise when the sound moved down from the satellites to the sub there seemed to be sudden increase in volume and this discrepancy bothered me. Once this one done however things seemed much for fluid. The high notes do not scream and everything sounds clear. Volume wise it is quite capable, but does not go stupidly loud. We find that we have the volume level sitting around the middle mark most of the time. I noted that the sub-woofer does not go down quite as low as our previous sub, but then this one is passive and so this couldn't be expected... shame, but never mind.5) Internet Video - Not much to say here, in a good way... It worked brilliantly and I look forward to watching much more iPlayer that I have in the past. It integrates with the remote so it feels just like watching a DVD (e.g. the pause, play, stop, rewind and fast forward buttons all function from the remote). All I want now is the channel 4 to get on the band waggon!6) Local Video Streaming - I was excited that windows 7 detected the Blu-ray player straight away, and I was able to open windows media player and right click an album and select "play to". In a matter of seconds the album was playing on the surround system in the other room... What's more I could pause and skip tracks by walking next door and using the remote. I was then rather disappointed to find that trying the same with photos and videos... Unsupported format it said - Cuh! Well, the happy news is that after a little research I have got all my mp4's and div-x's streaming by installing Serviio (a free DLNA media server). I tried a few alternatives with mixed results, but this one seemed to make a good backing from a number of people with the same player. The main quirks are that the Sony player does not support CD or DVD covers (a big shame as that would have helped my kiddies when browsing the lists of films & music, and would have looked nice). Also an mp4 video had to be transcoded on the fly to an mp2 video to be streamed, and yet if you put the mp4 on a memory stick or removable hard disk and plug it in directly to the player then it can be played natively... The upshot of this is that to save your PC from doing lots of extra work it would be much better just to stick all your files on an external hard disk and keep it plugged in to the back of your Blu-ray player.7) Conclusion - So, does it do everything? Straight out the box it does an awful lot right. The sound is good, the Blu-ray & DVD playback is crisp and smooth. The internet video works well and is very well integrated and really feels a part of the TV experience. DLNA Media streaming is a little disappointing out of the box as Sony's / Microsoft's implementations don't appear to talk very well to each other, but with a little help from a 3rd party DLNA Server (i.e. Serviio) things can at least be got to work well (even if your media requires transcoding for no real reason). Would I buy this product again if I knew what I know now? Yes I certainly would.

5Outstanding - both Value and Quality
By Chief Smeg
I have owned this setup since September 2010 and I am still at a loss to properly describe the quality of this unit, Stunning and Outstanding do not even come close.I have recently been struggling to find a decent Blu Ray homne cinema system. I first bought the Samsung HT-BD1220 2.1 ch Blu-ray Home Cinema System and had to return it because of excessive fan noise. Next to be tried was the LG HB354BS 2.1 ch Blu-ray Home Cinema System - this too suffered from some fan noise but also seems to have been abandoned by LG as far as firmware updates are concerned - luckily I was able to return this to the company I bought it from due to a technical problem with they system. I thank the day I bought the Sony - it really is in a whole different league. The previous 2 systems I had tried were 2.1 because of the price issue - I did not have a load of money to spend, however on the return of the LG I spotted that the Sony had finally dropped to a price that allowed me to buy it.Now for the review...Setup was simple - the Sony comes with a calibration mic that meant the system sorted out its own speaker distances and levels. Took about 2 minutes. Job done. The speaker cables are plenty long enough and have proprietry plugs on the end that connects to the player - these are colour coded to the speaker backs and so it is not possible to get this wrong. The speakers are small and unobtrusive but don't be put off by their size, they pack a powerful punch when needed. Sound is just superb. I can fill my living room with the sound of a movie without bothering my neighbours (which I am sure they appreciate), the Sub Woofer bass does not boom like some systems, it simply does the job it is supposed to do, voices are clear and I swear I am hearing things in my movies I have not noticed before. I have connected my Samsung UE32B6000 to this via an optical connection and listen to the normal TV through it - perfect.Picture quality is the best I have yet seen on a blu ray player - the DVD upscaler is very good, but as with all upscalers, they are simply not in the same league as the true HD that you get with Blu Ray.The Remote is smallish but not cluttered and it can be set to turn on my Samsung TV - which is a nice touch. The build quality of the remote is fine too and it sits quite nicely in the hand for all operation.Connectivity is good especially if (like me) you have connected the system to the internet (wired connection to my router although you can buy a sony wireless adaptor) - I am automatically notified of any firmware updates, can watch iPlayer, 5 on Demand, YouTube, DailyMotion and many many more (the only problem with this though is that the remote is not the best way to type in text - it uses the same input method you would for texting on a mobile phone), I have even found a free app from Sony that allows me to use my ipod touch or iphone to operate as a remote (that way I can use a conventional keyboard).I can connect my iphone or an ipod to the system via a front USB socket and listen to music (and you can control things with the remote) - unfortunatly you cannot watch videos from your ipod, but this was not a deal breaker for me.Fan noise - what fan noise? As mentioned earlier I have 2 different systems by Samsung and by LG and both suffered from excessive fan noise (the Samsung was so bad you could hear it over the top of some dialogue), the Sony is as quiet as a mouse, if you park yourself next to it after it has been runnig for an hour, you will hear the fan, but you have to be right next to the unit when the room is silent - basically if you have ever suffered from noisy fans in a unit then you can rest easy. This really is fantastic value (I paid [...] from Amazon) and it will tick all the boxes for a 5.1 Home Cinema system if that is what you are after. My only regret is that I never bought it sooner.

5Simply the best Blu-Ray home cinema system.
By Soundman
I purchased this system after reading the highly complimentory review in "Which" magazine, and reading the reviews on here. However it was with a lingering sense of "have I ordered the right thing" that I waited for it to arrive. Arrive it did, it was easy to set up cables and speakers all colour coded, but DO use the calibration mic to set the speakers up, it takes a few minuetes but essentail if your going to get the best from the surround sound, also if your not able to place the speakers "symetricaly" in your room the speaker set up will allow for this. I also used very high quality HDMI/Optical/LAN cable for the internet setup. How good is it? Well this Sony system is "absolutely awesome" sound quality and picture are just amazing, The DVD "upscaling" feature on your existing DVD's is likewise very impressive, giving you a far better picture and sound quality on your existing films etc, It plays Audio CD's with a crisp clear uncluttered sound, classical music sounds as though your in the middle of the orchestra, and every thing is just terrific. I have viewed systems three times as expensive and they just dont compare to this product, if your looking to buy a Blu-Ray home cinema system then get this one (it's on an even better offer now than when I purchased it, still I dont mind the few quid difference) trust me you will NOT be dissappointed.Saving Private Ryan on Blu-Ray full Dolby 5.1 Surround sound is an experience not to be missed.Do I recccomend it? Most certainly, a resounding YES!

5Parrot CK3100 LCD
By decruz1017
Excellent product , fitting is straight forward, additional wiring is required for individual vehicals to mate with the CK3100,so that it co-ordinates with your onboard entertainment & navigation systems if fitted. these can vary in prices so some homework needs to be done, The CK3100 is simple to set up, however some tools need to be purchased if you have to remove any entertainment systems and a some knowledge will be required, if you attempt to play with the vehical electrics get some proffessional advice first. Be aware that disconnecting batterys as recommended, may alter your vehical computer units and may have to be initiated once reconnection is made. The CK3100 has a clear easy to read display unit that you can attatch in almost any position to allow the driver to see without distraction. I have fitted these to my fleet cars to avoid any of my staff losing their licences and endangering other road users whilst staying in communication. I have received good feedback from the users and can recommend this product.Decruz1017 Company Director. Care home Group.

5Clock on sony!
By Ice Scream
We've been holding off from buying a DAB alarm radio with IPOD dock because they just don't seem to be wholly reliable and the feedback has been off-putting. After reviewing the options and feedback from the Amazon community the common faults and niggles seem to be, the clock failing to keep time, the back light being to bright, poor signal reception for DAB stations, poor sound quality and loss of station memory. As far as we can tell this unit is spot on for our needs and addresses the concerns above. The clock has an independent CR 2032 battery back up for the clock. There is a visual on screen icon to notify when the battery is low. The back up light has four easy to selectable manually adjusted light level settings; Very bright, comfortably bright, low to dim and off. Fortunately for us the DAB signal strength is great in our area so no problem there and FM is OK as well. The sound quality is very good for a compact unit and more than loud enough for a bedroom. It also has a couple of bass and stereo boost buttons if needed. No comment on the memory loss for the 20 preset stations but hopefully the battery back will preserve them. The unit was disconnected from the mains and it retained the stations presets. There are two independent alarm settings modes. Alarm setting option are; time, weekday, weekend and everyday, preset station or IPOD or buzzer selection and volume level. There are sleep and snooze timers with four or so present durations. There is a small remote control which covers everything except setting the alarm time. The range about 4 meters but you have to be generally in front of the unit. The IPOD charges in the dock. It's early days so I hopefully this unit will continue to do what it is doing. Our previous clock radio was a 3 to 4 year old first generation Pure Chronos. This has a reliable clock but the station memory keep failing every 3 to 5 days. The outcome is getting woken up to Absolute radio which can be a bit abrupt in the morning.Sorry Amazon, John Lewis has you beaten on price at the moment which is very unusual.

5Iphone 4 clock radio
By neil_down
After trying a cheaper docking station / DAB radio from a supermarket which I ended up returning, this Sony is much more impressive. There was no interference from the phone, and the range of DAB stations that it was able to pick up was much improved. Some over 50 miles away from where I live. The features are good, and most importantly, the looks, sound quality and build quality appear good enough to last a few years.Set up is simple, plug in, it sets the clock and scans for DAB stations. Has 2 DAB tuners. Alarm setting is simple, with setting for 2 alarms, e.g. weekdays / weekends. Comes with a battery for handling electrical power outages (mainly so the alarm still goes off, not for holding the clock time as that is set from the DAB stations). Sound quality from iphone 4 is good, charges the iphone of course. One downside is the remote. Its small, but the buttons are all the same size, and little to tell in a dim bedroom light what they actually do. However, I guess with time that will be less of an issue.(Getting hold of these is difficult at current time of writing this (Jan 2011). Ours came direct from Sony, I didn't want to wait 1-3 months. That's a first for me to not get direct from Amazon, perhaps proving the popularity of the product.)Overall, a good product.

5Impressive
By M. Cooper
I'd been missing music in the bedroom since my ex got our iPod dock in the breakup last year. No matter: this one sounds better anyway. Good things come to those who wait and all that.I was holding out and coveting a friend's Bose SoundDock but - as usual - the combination of high prices and lack of features for the money kept me from spending (despite admiring the sound from some of their kit, I've yet to buy a single Bose product). I've got two Pure DAB radios at home: a One in the kitchen and the original Siesta in the bedroom. Both are excellent, and I was almost committed to buying either the new version of the Siesta or Chronos with the dock built in, until I read some negative reviews here on Amazon. This Sony box kept coming up, so I checked it out. Oddly, the Amazon description doesn't describe it as a DAB radio - but it most certainly is, and it's DAB+ ready, too. The styling is a little like something Sony would have done in the 90s, admittedly, and it won't suit all rooms for that reason, but there are lots of reasons to love it. Here are a few. - Price. You get a fully-featured DAB/DAB+ clock radio for less than the cost of many half-decent docks. - Sound. It fills our double bedroom admirably. "MegaExpand" does some phasey stuff to broaden the sound stage, if you want it (works better on some material than others), and MegaBass does its usual deal with aplomb. A good tip is to site it in a corner if you can - the reflection off the walls will help the base frequencies sing out. - Dimmable display. Three levels of backlighting, or turn off the backlight altogether if you want. Perfect for the light-sensitive, like me. If you do turn off the backlight, the clock will still light up when the alarm goes off. Neat. - Dock. Generous enough to accommodate my iPhone 3GS while still in its silicon vest, so no fiddling around. - iPhone compatible. The radio in the iPhone does not interfere with the reception. No annoying messages when you drop the iPhone in, and everything fades down nicely when a call or text comes in. (Or, for an undisturbed night's sleep, do what I do and switch it to Airplane Mode.) - Lets me use my iPhone radio player apps in the background, effectively turning the whole thing into a proper internet radio for a fraction of the cost and without all that fiddly setup that internet radios are so famous for. (This is cool.) - Allows you to set the station to wake up to on an individual, per alarm, basis. So you can drift off to sleep with one station and wake up with another. (My Pure Siesta couldn't manage this.) - A dinky remote control that allows you to control iPod tracks. That said, if you're far enough away to use it, you won't be able to read the iPod/iPhone screen, most likely. But it's handy for volume at least. - Nice button layout with plenty of room between them. So, once you get used to where they are, you can fumble around in the dark quite effectively (insert joke here). - It's DAB+ ready. So, when we finally pull our fingers out and do digital switchover, it'll cope with the new EPG, which a DAB-only radio won't. (It's not clear yet how DAB+ will be implemented in the UK, and how obsolete it may make DAB. There are no DAB+ broadcasts in the UK currently, but it provides potentially better audio quality using a better digital audio codec.)If it took batteries it would be perfect. But if it took batteries it would either be a lot bigger, or it would be the same size and the sound would suffer, so that's not a deal-breaker for me. And, admittedly, the utilitarian styling won't suit everyone, either. But for your £80 you get a very nice clock/radio/dock which will do pretty much everything you'd expect. Look no further if you're on a £100 budget.

5Superb piece of kit!
By GG
I purchased the Apple iMac 21.5" desktop from Amazon over the Easter weekend. By the following Tuesday it had arrived!! I've always used macs, being a designer it's the industry standard, and I love them for their user friendliness, speed and good looks! This machine is no exception. I was already familiar with it having had one at work but had never set one up myself from scratch. It's a doddle to set up straight out of the box, even for the novice user! It comes pre-loaded with Mac OSX Snow Leopard, it really is a case of switch it on and off you go!The iMac also comes with a wireless keyboard and mouse. I had heard that the keyboard was not that great but now having used it for a few weeks I'm pleased to report I love it! I'm pushed for space and this machine, with the tiniest keyboard, is perfect! It's compact with everything being in the screen so doesn't take up too much room. The screen is a decent size, lovely glossy surface which gives great colour. All in all I'm chuffed with it. It's sleek, compact, fast and a doddle to set up!Can't recommend it enough!!

5Amazing
By Mr. A. L. Wilkinson
I had put up with PCs and the various issues with windows for many years but now I own a Mac I will never go back to PCs or windows again. The iMac starts in moments and runs smoothly no matter how many applications you have open at any time. It looks amazing and works like a computer should work. The software available for the iMac is not as wide in range as you can get for windows but applications like iWork and Garageband are in a different league to Microsoft's equivalent offerings. If you are going to spend this kind of money get a Mac it is well worth every penny.

5A convert to mac
By Bill
After many months deliberating over whether to go for a Sony Vaio or an I-Mac, opted to I-Mac eventhough there is a significant extra cost. Amazon delivery was fautless. The product looks superb not just the clean lines but the wireless keyboard and mouse make the whole ensemble a beauty to behold. The start-up is within 45 seconds so very acceptable and the transition from PC to Mac is hardly an issue. I am now a convert.

5Excellent Buy
By M. Wilkinson
Bought for my mother after obtaining a 37" version for my wife. Very easy to set up the basics, which is probably enough for most viewers and basically works efficiently straight from the box. Picture quality is outstanding, sound very good and of course no messing around with set top boxes etc. for the switchover. Also Amazon delivered, free, at a very fast rate, making it an even better buy.

5Impressive
By M. Wilkinson
Took a bit of a chance on this one, after much internet research, as the specification looked good. I don't think I could have chosen better, particularly in this price range (big saving & free delivery via Amazon really helped). Basic setup is very easy and good enough, I suspect, for the average viewer who wants to get it out of the box and be up and running in about 10 minutes. There are many items that you can meddle with via the menu, but why worry if you can plug and play to a high standard anyway. My wife is delighted with this one as it was really for her birthday and is very impressed with the picture, sound quality and ease of operation. So it is 5 stars from me and many thanks to the good people of Amazon who managed to get it here after just 3 days!

5Very nice TV for the price
By LondonMan88
So I have had this tv for a few days now, I thought I would use it a bit before writing a review. The tv itself is very easy on the eye, sharp straight edges make it fit in with any half modern living room. The picture is very, very clear and when watching any high definition programs or films, you can see every blemish and impurity on the actors faces which is kind of refreshing :D The sound quality on this tv is very good, I have had the volume turned up pretty high for some gaming and noticed no degradation in sound quality, sound is also further improved if you turn on Clear Voice II. The tv picture is highly customisable and the levels of contrast and brightness are completely adequate for watching tv or playing games.I decided to play Grand Theft Auto 4 for a few hours to see how it handles games and it handles them well! The size of the screen makes it feel like you are almost in the game! Getting chased and shot at by cops in high definition game mode is lots of fun! I notived no tv lag when playing game whatsoever so you can rest easy. Onto the menu, it is very well laid out and easy to use. You can completely customise the tv in under 5 minutes to suit your needs, you can change the labels of each hdmi port so you know which one belongs to your dvd player, or games console, or satellite tv. You can turn the standby green light on and off by the settings if you wish. The tv comes with a handy 'quick menu' button so you can change the modes or major settings of the tv easily without having to faff around with the full menu.Well I am going to go back to blowing up some cop cars in GTA4, but before I go there is maybe 1 bad thing about this tv, its nothing too major but the tv is only 50hz which means that at 42" it can become quite noticeable when watching fast moving action, like the balls at Wimbledon or running in athletics. Don't get me wrong, it's not so bad that you can not watch it, but if you focus on it you can notice it. For me, it's more than fine. Thanks for reading!
