I ordered the Archos 5 internet tablet 500GB version as I was initially attracted by its large hard drive. I have filled my ipod classic 160GB and was looking for an alternative.To my surprise (!), I encountered similar problems in faulty functionality as other reviewers. I normally take close notice of Amazon reviews but was blinkered by the apparent amount of functions.For 300+ pounds, I expect a product that works and expect prompt customer supoprt from the manufacturer.Here's my experience:My problems:1) The GPS function refused to pick up any satellites. A delayed response back from Archos support said that the unit needs repair.2) Also, i found the music player and the FM radio to crash several times in one evening while navigating through my music library.The Bad points:1) The GPS functionality (it you get it to work) only has a 7 day trial period then you have to pay either £39 for a license for UK and Ireland or £49 for Europe.2) The GPS drains the battery quickly3) Slow reponse times to menu selection4) The need to immediately download a software/firmware updates straight out of the box.5) WiFi range was far less than my laptop computer. My router is downstairs but I couldn't use the WiFi on the Archos in my bedroom, although the laptop would pick up a medium strength signal.6) The battery seems to take forever to charge on USB.7) Cold boot time can be at least 2 minutes. (there is a "deep sleep" mode which allows quick start up but this will use battery)8) When you leave a question/problem/query for Archos technical support, you are told you should receive a response within 2 business days. The earliest they replied to me was 5 business days. Keep to your own promises, Archos!Good points:1) Large hard drive space for videos and music2) PDF viewer (but slow refresh rate)3) Built in speaker (but quiet and tinny)4) High resolution screen for looing at video and photos.In summary, I sent mine back for a refund due to the faults mentioned above, but overall I was disappointed by the performance of the music player - which is what I originally bought it for.I did read other reviews about the problems other people had out of the box - they were true. Goodness knows what the manufacturing yield Archos manage to achieve on this product - it must be really low.Very disappointing.

I can't beleive how much music I've put on this, still with loads of room to spare. Excellent picture and sound quality. Web radio and podcast access is great. I didn't realise it handled "sideloading" with BBC iPlayer so well. Pity web video streaming from the main channels is not properly implemented at the moment. Touch screen odd if you're used to a multi-touch screen, but this is very useable all the same. There is an easy hack available to adapt this to full google market apps such as You Tube and Maps etc. Nice one Archos. I'm getting the DVR dock next..

I've been a fan of archos for a long time - ever since I had an Archos 20 GB MP3 player, I've followed their products religiously, from the Archos MP4 player, Archos 500, 605, 5, and now this. The only reason I bought this was because I broke my SECOND Archos 5 by accidentally dropping it. They do not survive the slightest drop, which is a shame, but good for them because they make more money. Anyways, this device is a fair bit larger in comparison with the older Archos 5 (which, is worth buying as long as you don't drop it), which in itself isn't too much of an issue. What I am finding very frustrating and disappointing is that it regularly "hangs" on me, requiring a reboot. Also, very occasionally, the volume goes full blast for a few milliseconds, and then goes back to original volume - unfortunately this still makes me jump out of my seat. The "Home" button doesn't actually go home, it goes to the home of the current media category. You then have to go back one to go home. The automatic switching between landscape and portrait does not work well. Often times while I'm holding it horizontal, it switches to vertical, forcing me to flick my wrist so that it goes horizontal again. Their instructions say that you HAVE to use Media Player 11 to transfer files and music. I don't like Media Player 11, luckily I figured out I can reformat the device to be Windows compatible so it appears as a drive letter for me. The device takes longer to boot than it's predecessor, because it's using a new operating system - Android. Is this a good thing? In my opinion - no. It was fine before, they've just gone and make something that was really good - much worse. Oh, and yes I did upgrade the firmware to the latest version - still problematic.I would highly encourage you to NOT "upgrade" to this device, because it will put you off Archos forever. Their older non Internet Tablet Archos 5 is still available to purchase, please buy one of them. Sure, it has less hard drive space than this one and it will break if you drop it, but you'll enjoy the product much more. I'm hoping this one breaks (or I'll throw it against the wall in frustration one day when it cuts out on me), and I'll buy the older, more reliable Archos 5.
